An important part of the complete success of the police department includes part-time officers who provide the same quality service to the University community as full-time officers. Reserve officers are paid to work various special events that are scheduled on University properties throughout the year. These special events include but are not limited to Carolina football and basketball games, dances, performing arts events, etc. Reserve Officers are vested with the same rights, privileges, duties, and obligations as full time officers while on duty.

The high standards and expectations of reserve officers also allows them the opportunity to assist patrol operations when needed.  Working in a directed position, reserve officers can assist full time officers with certain patrol tasks such as building security checks, high visibility patrols, traffic direction, and other vital duties.

UNC Police is dedicated to providing our reserve officers with professional training and practical law enforcement experience. The application and approval process must meet the same requirements as applicants for full time positions. Applicants must be currently certified by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.
