UNC Police strives to build lasting relationships with the UNC Community which includes faculty, staff and students. We know that at times that there has been uncertainty and uneasiness when citizens deal with law enforcement not only locally but nationwide. It is important that we create a natural environment that our community feels comfortable asking questions and learning about law enforcement. For these reasons, the UNC Police Department has established a Citizens Police Academy (CPA).

The Citizens Police Academy is intended to open the lines of communication between the UNC community and the UNC Police. This is a program conducted multiple times a year and is designed to familiarize citizens with the “how/what/why” of police procedures and provide an opportunity to interact with officers. Our goal is to produce informed citizens who can take the information they have learned back into their respective areas and share with friends and colleagues and have a better understanding of police operations.

During this program participants will get the opportunity to actually use some of the equipment utilized by UNC Police Officers and walk in the shoes of a UNC Police Officer through several role-play exercises. Class size is limited to 15 participants per session. The training provided reflects current themes and topics and encourages discussion of how police operate.

While completion of this course gives citizens an understanding of the workings of the UNC Police, it does not make the participant a certified law enforcement officer, nor is it designed to train citizens to perform law enforcement duties.
