The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program offered by UNC Police provides realistic, self-defense tactics for UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty and staff. These offerings provide a truly holistic approach to self defense education, supporting the necessity of continuous learning in order to provide realistic options for each population as they go through life. Each of these programs includes educational components comprised of lecture, discussion, physical resistive strategies. All of which are facilitated by certified R.A.D. instructors supported by a network of dedicated professionals who honor one another’s student through our unique Lifetime Return and Practice Policy.

R.A.D. classes are typically scheduled to meet between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. To inquire about current class offerings, please call the crime prevention office at 919-966-3230. Class size is typically limited to 15 participants and a waiting list will be maintained with preference given once classes are scheduled.

Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D) for students, faculty and staff. Much of this 12-hour program is spent practicing the application of self-defense tactics, including realistic simulation training.  This course is designed to empower participants and build confidence in their ability to defend themselves.

  • Transgender and non-binary individuals are welcome to choose whichever program best fits their needs.
  • Women of average fitness will be able to participate successfully.
  • Participants who complete the course may present their signed manuals at any R.A.D. training facility in the United States or Canada to practice or participate in refresher training at no charge.

R.A.D. for Women training is offered several times a year. Afternoon, evening, or weekend classes may be offered as three four-hour blocks or four three-hour blocks. Maximum class size is 15. For information about class schedules, call the Crime Prevention Office at 919-966-3230.

Resisting Aggression Defense for students, faculty and staff. Much of the 12-hour program is spent practicing the application of self-defense tactics, including realistic simulation training. This program gives men opportunity to focus on the recognition of aggressive behavior, along with the negative repercussions and the role men play in reducing violence and aggression. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice self-defense in a secure training environment. Transgender and non-binary individuals are welcome to choose whichever program best fits their needs.

R.A.D. for Men training is hosted by request and level of interest. Maximum class size is 15. For information about class schedules, call the Crime Prevention Office at 919-966-3230.

A short introduction to self-defense education, this presentation provides a basic overview of the full R.A.D. programs.  This informal program can be hosted anywhere and is conducted by request.
