Student on laptop in the library

University life can be both exciting and challenging. Prioritizing your safety and security is an integral part of your college experience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Police offers valuable tips to empower you with proactive measures for both personal safety and securing your property.

When it comes to larceny prevention, the combined efforts of students and the UNC Police are crucial. Criminals are always on the lookout for opportunities to snatch backpacks, laptops, cellphones and other valuables.

Reporting suspicious activity or individuals promptly is the first line of defense. If you happen upon such a situation, swift action is essential. Whether it’s dialing 911 or locating a police officer to report an incident, your proactive response may thwart potential theft.

Maintaining a closed-door policy is another critical aspect of safeguarding your personal space. Whether you reside in a dormitory or an apartment, ensuring your door is always locked is fundamental. Unsecured doors serve as enticing entry points for thieves. Additionally, you should never prop open doors in residence halls or academic buildings.

Libraries, dining halls and gyms, or any place on campus where you are more likely to be occupied and not closely monitoring your belongings, are hotspots for theft. Utilize cable-locking mechanisms available from UNC Student Stores to secure your computer. Take only the materials you need to the library, and try to obtain the shelved books you need before going to your work area. Use a gym locker during workouts to store personal items or secure them in a clothing pocket.

To report lost property, call the UNC Police non-emergency line 919-962-8100. Those needing to use TTY/TDD feature can dial 911 also. On the reverse, if you find lost property, please turn it in to a University representative. UNC Police manages the lost and found property turned into the Public Safety Building and holds those items for six months. Check the lost and found items list to view current inventory, along with a list of other lost and found locations across campus.

By partnering with the UNC Police and implementing these strategies, you can contribute to reducing instances of larceny on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Remember, safety is a shared responsibility, and your vigilance can significantly contribute to creating a secure campus environment for all.
